Bio gas system serves 60 – 80 % of the energy on our farm

Early June, we decided for the construction of a biogas plant. The increasing electricity bills motivated us to take this step. We expect to reduce our farm electricity bill from about KSHS 9,000. - by KSHS 4,500. And the gas bill of about KSHS 3,500. - will be eliminated completely from the month’s budget.

Green House Tomatoes – Success Story

In the middle of January, we started our green houses project for tomatoes. Within approx. 3 weeks the green houses were built and seeded. Since the middle of Mai 2011, a continuous harvesting started and now this gives us a regular income.

At our farm there is almost everything that we need in our life. We rely on diversified production. It is easier to deliver the entire range of products to nearby markets. Buying of vegetables, fruits, eggs, chicken, and milk for the household falls practically to zero.

After a year’s hard work, we, the entire Swisskenko team is a bit proud of what we have achieved in this short time. Our test farm has changed its face completely and today almost 100% of it is utilized.

The activities on our test farm, according to our expectations caught the attention of the Chief of Jua Kali, which were very happy about. During his walk he saw some changes on our farm. The new water tank, the vegetable farm, the Push &Pull maize resulted into the Chief coming into our contact.

3 Weeks and our 2 Tomato Green – Houses are ready

In just under 3 weeks, our new two green houses in our test farm are completed. With the strong support of an experienced project manager and with the man power of some staff, in no time we were able to construct two wonderful green houses and worked on the first planting.With a budget of about 3,000 Euro....

The knowledge about genetically modified Seedlings is not much pronounced in kenya!

Farm day moved to May or June

With the start of activities with the Ministry of Agriculture, it was decided that a farm day would be held at our test farm in March or April 2011. It shall be shown that one can grow in a farm in Jua Kali more that only maize. Although the work with the green houses progressed very well, we worry a little about the water for our open vegetable farm and for the supply of cows and sheep.
